Google recently released its Transparency Report, revealing that VIZ Media, one of the largest manga publishers outside of Japan, ranks seventh among companies that most frequently request content removals due to copyright infringement. With an impressive total of 305 million URLs removed from search results for alleged piracy, VIZ demonstrates its commitment to protecting authors' rights and combating the illegal consumption of manga.
This result is the fruit of joint work between VIZ Media and organizations such as CODA (Content Overseas Distribution Association), which seeks to expose and prosecute operators of piracy websites. Recently, CODA requested subpoenas against eight manga piracy websites, asking internet giants such as Google and Cloudflare to provide information about those involved, in order to intensify legal action.
In a global market where manga consumption is constantly growing, VIZ Media stands out as a leading distributor of major titles, including One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen . In 2023, the company accounted for 57% of the best-selling manga in the United States, demonstrating its impact and relevance in the sector.
Recently, Brazilian websites have also been affected. Pages such as Tsuki Mangás, Manga Livre, Mangás Chan, and Central de Mangás suffered from an increase in notifications, highlighting the impact of actions taken by VIZ, KakaoPage, and CODA to protect authors' rights.
Besides VIZ Media, companies like Crunchyroll and Funimation are also among those that most frequently request removals, although many of these actions are carried out by authorized representatives, such as Remove Your Media LLC, one of the most active agencies in the fight against piracy.
