On November 9, 2024, the South Korean government took an important step in the fight against piracy by arresting the operator responsible for the popular websites Noonoo TV, TVWIKI, and OKTOON. Combined, these portals accumulated more than 53 million monthly visits and were widely used for the illegal consumption of anime, webtoons, and TV series.
The operation was conducted by the Scientific Investigation Unit for Copyright Crimes of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The action included the closure of the platforms and the publication of an official notice on the seized domains. This is yet another measure by South Korea to combat the illegal consumption of content, reinforcing its zero-tolerance towards piracy.
Noonoo TV, which had already ceased operations the previous year due to legal pressure, similarly resurfaced through TVWIKI. The connection between the sites was confirmed through technical analysis, including the sharing of application code and similar domains.
Furthermore, the website OKTOON, which specializes in webtoons, was also part of the dismantled network. This operation follows previous actions against other piracy networks in the country, such as the notorious Agitoon.
Although the action represents a significant victory, the challenge remains of preventing new sites from occupying the space left by those taken down. Korean authorities and major entertainment companies remain steadfast in their fight against piracy, protecting the rights of creators and promoting the legal consumption of content.
